New Year's Resolutions: 2014

Its that time again; New Year's resolutions. Does the thought make you cringe? Have you set seemingly attainable resolutions over the years that you have not been able to achieve? You are not alone. Only 8% of the population that sets resolutions actually achieves them. Yes, only 8%! Some common, and probably all too familiar, resolutions are: 

 

  • Lose weight

  • Eat healthier

  • Get a better job

  • Enjoy life more

  • Stay/get fit

  • Quit smoking

  • Be more organized (I’m feeling this one)

 

One word comes to mind; daunting! With these broad, lofty resolutions its no wonder most people fail before barely getting started!

 

Now for the upside to this post. There are things you can do to make your 2014 resolutions happen. I actually prefer the term goals over resolutions because they can be broken down week by week into manageable action steps.

 

  • Don’t set too many goals or you will feel overwhelmed. Attaining 1 goal is much better than falling short of 4 and feeling bad about it. Ideally, set 2 goals to complete in 3 months, then set 2 more for the next 3 months and so on. 

  • Identify goals that are doable and specific to you. Your BFF might be junk food free but not eating processed food 3 days a week might be more realistic for you. 

  • Be accountable to someone. Health Coaching is brilliant in this area! I happen to know of a really great one if you are interested. Writing goals down or stating them out loud provide clarity too. 

  • Note small achievements. If you meet your goal for the week, however small, pat yourself on the back and tell someone your great news. Success builds on itself.

  • If you fall off the wagon, don’t throw in the towel (idioms abound). Tomorrow is a new day and opportunity to be successful.

  • Finally, if too many forgotten resolutions has you turned off to this idea altogether, think about 1 small habit you can change. If you normally drink a diet coke at lunch, have water a few days each week. Cereal each morning? Have oatmeal instead. You get the idea.
