Glutathione; Because I Want You To Be Healthy

Glutathione is an antioxidant that has helped, and still helps me to feel good. If you have tick-borne infections, glutathione can be a lifesaver when dealing with a die-off reaction, potentially keeping you out of the emergency room. 

 

But glutathione is an antioxidant that everyone needs to know about to stay healthy and vital, yet most have never heard of it. Integrative and functional medicine physicians and practitioners talk about this important antioxidant but most others unfortunately don’t.

 

Gluta-what?

 

Glutathione is your bodies master antioxidant! It is the the ultimate detoxifier, immunity booster, and longevity enhancer. In overview, your body produces glutathione naturally, you produce less as you age, and those dealing with infections and chronic conditions are typically deficient in it. 

 

Glutathione is produced in your body using three amino acids: cysteine, glycine, and glutamine. Every cell in your body uses these three amino acids to make glutathione. Cysteine contains sulfur which is sticky, causing unwanted free radicals, heavy metals, damaged cells, pathogenic material, and other toxins, to stick to it. It is like a mop, recycling itself around your body, cleaning up the stuff that shouldn’t be in there. The more glutathione you have, the more that gets mopped up. 

 

Whether you are feeling great or working towards improved health, you can benefit from increasing this antioxidant due to the environmental toxins and stressors that we all encounter each day from living and breathing. Additional causes of reduced levels are poor diet, stress, frequent acetaminophen use, pesticides, alcohol consumption, artificial sweeteners, and radiation.

 

So how do we increase glutathione in our bodies?

 

Taking an antioxidant called N-Acetyl-Cysteine, which is a derivative of cysteine, is an excellent way to increase levels and is an important antioxidant and detoxifier unto itself. Taking one 600 mg capsule per day of N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) has shown to increase blood plasma glutathione levels by 38% after just a few months. NAC can prevent early damage to DNA as well. This is a great supplement! As with most supplements; you need to take it every day, long-term. 

 

Eat cruciferous vegetables and asparagus as well as sulphur rich foods including onions and garlic.

 

Exercise regularly; not so much though that you are exhausted, as this will deplete levels.

 

Raw milk and undenatured whey protein are good sources as well if you consume dairy and feel comfortable going this route.

 

Glutathione pills or capsules don’t work because it is not well absorbed across the gastrointestinal tract so don't be tempted to purchase a $20 bottle that you find online. Fortunately there are liposomal forms (like our cells) that get absorbed into our cells that are very effective and can mitigate die-off reactions and pull toxins when a more intense, targeted approach is necessary. IV glutathione is another excellent option.
